our proposal story

By now, you might know that the owners of this trailer bar business, Mitchell and Emilia (hi, that's me!), created Scout to be the bar for their wedding. But what you probably don't know is what all came before that. We think it'd be nice to start getting to know each other, don't you? And what better place to start than a proposal story?

So, it all started five years earlier. Mitchell and I met in residence in university and slowly became friends over the course of our first year. He went away, home for the summer, and we texted every single day. When he came back in the fall, he asked me out on our first date - mini-golfing. (By the way, PSA: mini-golfing is a great first date idea, because it is so clearly a date and it gives you an activity to focus on, but you can talk and flirt while you do so). Anyway, after that mini-golf endorsement, we didn't actually end up going because Mitchell's hockey practice ran late and the place was closed. So instead, we drove out just past the course and had the weirdest, most perfect first date. We wandered around the various random parts of St. Jacobs and talked. Then, Mitchell drove us out to a farm in his Ford Ranger and we stargazed and cuddled while we listened to country music. We got kicked out of our parking spot, because apparently it was "private property," and we moved the party just down the road.

Flash forward some years: I have picked out my own engagement ring and peer-pressured Mitchell into buying it. We have a wedding venue booked. Mitchell has kept me waiting impatiently for him to propose all summer. And after several false alarms, Mitchell finally finally finally sends me a suspicious text. He wants to take me mini-golfing. I text my best friend a screenshot and the 'eyes' emoji. He comes bearing Pita Pit. We eat and then we drive off. He tells me we're actually not going mini-golfing. That's the moment I know that this has to be the proposal.

So, he takes his sweet time wandering through St. Jacobs with me. In every place that we stopped on our first date, he has written me a love letter and covered it in twinkle lights (my favourite). After our meandering, we walk back to the hotel parking lot where Mitchell's car is. But in the parking lot is a Ranger, just like the one Mitch was driving on our first date. He circles the truck like a thief or a vandal and I make a joke: "we should steal it." Mitch grins at me and pulls a set of keys out of his pocket. "Alright," he says, and he unlocks the vehicle. Shocked, I get in and he literally drives us off into the sunset. We stop at Martin's Family Farm and we get out. This is the place we got kicked out of on our first date. He walks me into the orchard, gives me a very romantic little speech, and then gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him. I say yes.

We are affianced.

We turn to face a little champagne-and-twinkle-light picnic that Mitchell has set up for us. We sit, we toast, we drink, and we are thrilled.

Mitchell's friends who have been helping pop out of the bushes and we say hi. We take some photos. And then, we go home and call everybody to tell them the good news.

August 15, 2019. One of my favourite days of all time. I'm a sucker for romance and I love a good proposal story. Hit me up with your personal stories - I'd love to hear them! And if you're looking for somebody who knows how to plan a proposal, I know a guy...
