bridesmaid proposal boxes

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

CONGRATS, you're getting married!!

Now what??

If you're like me, one of the first things on your wedding-planning list is figuring out who you'd like to stand up with you as you get married (and plan that wedding alongside you!). It's time to ask your girls! Personally, I knew my engagement was coming and I had these boxes prepped and ready to ask my bridesmaids as soon as my then-boyfriend asked me. I loved doing it early on - it was fun to have everybody involved immediately, and if any of my friends were unsure about bridesmaid status either way, this clarified it right off the bat.

Whenever you decide to pop the question to your bridesmaids, this is an awesome chance to show a bit of appreciation for your girls. I have no doubt everybody would agree without any gifts (bribes?), but what a fun DIY project and opportunity for everybody to envision your wedding day you'd be missing!

I've seen endless cute bridesmaid proposal gifts on Pinterest, of course, but these are my take!

First of all, the boxes! These are from Michaels, and are $3 each. I bought white for the bridesmaids and kraft-paper brown for the mamas. The ribbon and faux eucalyptus were from Dollarama (but be prepared that you might need wire cutters to trim the branches!). I chose to DIY my little cards because I'm pretty confident in my calligraphy abilities (and then I just scanned my hand-written words and popped them into Canva!), but you can find all kinds of instant digital-download file options for this kind of thing on Etsy! The ribbon and branches were hot-glued onto the boxes, and the cards were just tucked into the ribbon. (PS - I opted to tell my bridesmaids they were, in fact, going to be bridesmaids, rather than ask, because we started planning the wedding before getting engaged so all of my best friends knew it was coming and knew they would be in the party).

Now onto the insides! First, I filled each box about halfway with shredded packing paper (also from Michaels). Let's start with the mamas' boxes, which just a bit different from the bridesmaids' boxes. I bought everybody these cute robes to get ready in from a Canadian shop on Etsy. The moms received a navy one and the girls got a silvery grey - I wanted us all to look coordinated in our getting-ready photos but wanted to distinguish the moms from the bridal party. Also, colours were decided based on our bridesmaids' dresses. I bought everybody a mini Henkell bottle of sparkling rose, along with a gold-rimmed stemless champagne flute (found at Marshalls for about $6 each).

A couple things were added to the bridesmaids' boxes...

First of all, peep the gorgeous silver robes! For the bridesmaids, I added gold turtle-leaf-shaped coasters for the champagne flutes (also found in a pack at Marshalls, $10 for all four), and I used this amazing white chalk marker to personalize them. I also added a bottle of Essie nail polish (Topless and Barefoot, obviously). I told the girls that the robes and flutes were specifically for the morning of the wedding (so make sure you bring them!) and all other pieces were just gifts. I liked giving the nail polish as a gift because if the bridesmaids are looking for a neutral colour for the wedding, I've provided it, but if they'd rather go get their nails done, it's not needed for the wedding but can easily be used for other occasions or everyday use!

Lastly, for my sister and maid of honour: a highly bedazzled stopwatch for the wedding. But for what purpose?? She knew, but you'll have to stay tuned!

I know DIY isn't everybody's jam, but I had a blast putting these together for my best friends and my mom and soon-to-be mother in law. It was such a great way to start getting excited about my wedding day, and now that we have these things, it's easier to picture at least the start of the day! I'd love to hear how you proposed to your bridesmaids!

Happy gifting, loves!
